I have been rocking my iPhone 13pro in greyscale, with the minimalist launcher. No social media. Honestly it's been great. I think creating a discipline around your smartphone usage is the healthiest option. I know I need certain things sometimes. But having them on my phone the other 90% of the time is when they use me instead. Love seeing your channel grow 👍

As general advice I think it's safe to say that buying more stuff is no necessarily going to solve all our problems, especially if most of us already own a smartphone. There are many ways to start simplifying and being more intentional with the way we consume, like deleting apps and keeping only the ones you need and keeping certain activities like social media to a device like a laptop or desktop, changing themes or display colors to make using your phone less attractive and so on. It's important to get out of the mindset that buying more is what we need.

Exactly, and well said! My thoughts as well - I have a video on that I did a couple months ago about simplifying your current smartphone if you haven’t seen it 👍

Greed is the problem. Being smart about the things you buy is the key to living well and not giving a darn about what other people have or think. One example, I use Visible+ by verizon. Most people buy an iPhone and use Verizon. I bought a motorola one 5g UW phone. I also use that as my internet so I don't pay the cable company that everyone else does.

Personally, I've found that installing a minimalism app worked best for me! It completely changes your phone's interface to just text-based. This, combined with removing problematic apps and leaving it down to the bone essentials, has made the difference. Thanks as always Spencer!

I also require a smartphone for work. I tried a Sonim XP3 flip phone for several months with a super cheap call and text only plan, and still kept my smartphone and only used it at work. I ended up not liking the phone, because despite having a good service provider (the same provider as my smart phone), it never had good signal. I constantly missed calls and was unable to make calls. To remedy this, I decided to dumb down my Android phone as much as possible. I went into my settings and enabled developer options. This allowed me to disable all of the pre-installed apps that relate to social media, internet access, etc. This completely removed all social media and game related applications from the app tray and home screen, and the developer options also allowed me to shut off the microphone and camera for privacy reasons. I then installed a different app launcher called Launcher95. It replicates Windows based OS systems like Win95, WinXP, and several other themes. It makes my Android phone operate like a standard desktop computer and has greatly simplified my life, cut down on my data usage and distractions! The only apps on it now are the phone, messages, camera, calculator, and the app that I have to use for work. And when I am home, my phone gets set to airplane mode and stays on the dining table. I set the call forwarding settings to my home telephone so that when the smart phone service is off, all calls will be directed to my landline. It has been great!

Im being honest. I may never go back to the basic cell phone. But that doesn't not mean I won't use it. I still have one at home on deck in case a situation where my main phone broke. Though I have done this before: when I had a tablet, I used a basic cellphone. After my tablet broke, that's when I upgraded to a smart phone. After 7 years, that phone would not connect to the carrier any more, but wifi still works. So after upgrading to the current smart phone I have now, my old smart phone became my media device/tablet. As for apps, very little distracting apps are on my main phone, but they are on my old one. And there are apps I refuse to install like banking apps. I never gotten used to the layout on a mobile device and I don't feel comfortable using it. When it comes to banking, I make a visit to the bank. If I have to do some banking online, I'll do it at home on a computer

All your old GSM phones like Nokias and SonyEricssons, do they really work? I've heard of the 3G network getting shut down in European countries (not necessarily the EU from what I know), so why would GSM still be alive? Won't you need a new, dumb, phone designed for modern times but without apps?

I recently switched to my old iphone4s. It's kind of best of both worlds, since it has a lot of "smart" features, and the base apps are fine, but almost nothing from the app store works. I also didn't log into any accounts, so I only use calling and texting, notes from time to time, weather and google maps (I had to log in for a minute to download an old version, as the old apple maps don't seem to be working anymore), and I can also listen to podcasts and audiobooks (iBooks works very well for that). What's great about this setup is that I get absolutely zero notifications other than texts from my wife and mom from time to time. It's very calming. I sync the phone from time to time with the computer, as in the olden days, and then I can upload photos and tweak my audiobook setup. One great side effect of this endeavor is that normally this old iphone lasts ridiculously short on one charge, barely one day with very light use - but when you don't have any push notifications and turn off the internet for most of the day, only using it in short bursts for navigation, it lasts 3 days, and still has around 15% of battery at that time. It's amazing. I don't think I'll ever be going back to a normal smartphone (which I use as a tablet).

Hi Spencer, great to find your channel. My smart phone is an Iphone, but I'm looking to experiment with something more on the basic side. I don't have social media, games or music on my smartphone for a few years now, and have switched to standalone devices. It's been great rediscovering cameras, public radio, and reading books instead of so much screen time. I am looking to get a dumbphone to detach even further. I am curious though, voice calls are very important to me and I'd like something with call quality as good as the Iphone has, have you found any dumbphones which can match it? I'm curious for the Jelly review, that might be an option.

I've been using a cheap second hand alcatel dumbphone for months now, and It's been really liberating. My screen time on the smartphone was actually very low, but just the fact of having it was distracting enough. For me, the best solution has been to use my old smartphone just to keep the whatsapp web alive, which I use kind of in a way of how we used to use the old MSN, and I use the dumbphone for everything else. It's light, small, distraction-free and has physical buttons, which I love. Maybe someone else finds this combination helpful.

Tbh I used to used wired headphone until the AirPods trend came along. After a few years I caved and picked up a pair. Which have served me well. Don’t get me wrong wireless is great for working out and ill never go back on it in that regard. But after dealing with Bluetooth connectivity issues with other headphones it just makes me wish I could just plug in the wire and have the headphones simply work… I’m considering repurposing an old iPhone 8 to be my makeshift iPod when going out for walks ..

Sad thing about most Dunmbphones is Google, Facebook and all the most unhealthy services are already on those devices. Only pretty expensive devices intentionally designed to be distraction free like those shown in this video really are. I still think an Android (CalyxOS, GrapheneOS, LineageOS) device with intentionally selected and configured software would be the best solution. But people who can take control over their tech are typically not the people who fall victim to it. So people buy Dumpphones because they can't take control in hope of an easy solution.

Imagine all the charging cables you need to bring during travel. I am not against the dumb phone route and have tried dumb down my smart phone. Truth is the smart phone is a great handy tool and personal assistant. We just need to develop the skill to use it strategically instead of overuse it. Tips like turning the screen black and white works for me.

All it needs is a few celebs like George Clooney and Tom Cruise to be seen pulling out their dumb phone and chatting away and it would suddenly become the trendy thing to do. Unfortunately peer pressure will always be a brake to people making changes in their lives. It takes a lot of guts to go against the grain and be thought of as a nerd. As the old saying goes, " Fashion Rules".

Spencer: How does the Aurzen projector look when projecting standard DVD's? I am meaning at some point to gradually re-buy titles in the Blu Ray format. I think that Blu Rays are acceptable enough in regards to resolution. I just can't see 4K. In regard's to the James Bond films. Sometimes you can see wear in the elements of these on Blu Ray already and I find that the older Sean Connery titles can look better (wear wise) in DVD format in some cases. I collect 16mm prints as well. I think I will buy this projector soon. But just was wondering how DVD's look projected. I think that some of these Blu ray players can indeed upconvert DVD's as far as lines of resolution. Have no idea what DVD's would be like number wise compared to the resolution of 1080p. Thank you for any and all information. I would guess DVD's are 720p or less. Thank You! Sincerely, Tom Pennock

As I was watching this, preparing to write a comment, you literally hit every point I was going for. Funny that. I really really really wanted to use the MP02, but I needed Signal for work. When I first got it, I couldn't sync between desktop Signal and mobile Signal. Then when Punkt added that feature, it started bugging out and wouldn't let me sync anyway, so I gave up on it. I settled for the Cat S22 Flip and I absolutely adore it. It's chunky, kind of hard to use for any length of time (disincentivizing use), the battery is great, and the 5mp/2mp cameras absolutely such but have so much charm. I'm finally happy with a phone, after so many years. The only apps I have installed are Signal, Telegram, a media player loaded with all the same music I have on my iPod as a backup or for playing music outdoors, Uber, Transit (a local bus app), and my gym set/weight tracking app. Otherwise, over the last couple years I've also gone offline or analog wherever possible. I have two journals (one in the back pocket for running notes/scribbles, one big folio one for habit tracking and real journaling), my Canon AE-1 Program for photos, my iPods for music, a Kindle for books (which I read way more now!) and an iPad for smart features that I'd need less frequently. It brings me so much peace of mind. I feel like this is a wave that more and more people are swimming along with now. I joke that I try to live like it's 2004 again lol. If I need internet, I just write a note about what I wanted to look up, and look it up at home or the office on a desktop. I don't need a mobile computer with me 24/7 constantly hooked up to the internet. I'm not missing out on anything.

I worry about digital videos being edited. They edited E.T.

I'm still looking for software that will allow me to not only load a song into the iPod, but will allow me to put it in a playlist and also have some of the options, such as "skip while shuffling" and "remember playback position." You know, like iTunes did. And of course, I can't load iTunes into my MacBook Pro, because it can't co-exist with Music, apparently. I am using Swinsain for now, which does pretty well, but it doesn't support newer Nanos, and can't put in equalizer info or the two options I mentioned above. Can anyone help? Thanks.
